Morzine Snow Report: 4th December 2013

First Tour Up Mont Chery in Les Gets

featured in Snow report Author James Fisher, Morzine Video Reporter Updated

Phil and his friends from Ride Morzine packed away their mountain bikes and dusted off their skins yesterday for the first tour of the winter up Mont Chery in Les Gets.

Although there has been some snow recently, and on the higher ground there is  a half metre base the lower sections are still pretty patchy and our intrepid band set off from above the road under the Telecabin Mont Chery to avoid these patchier areas. The lower roads are still definitely roads and to save skinning over the tarmac it's advisable to drive up until the snow becomes thicker.

Once up onto the upper sections of the Mont Chery the snow is deeper and certainly deep enough to ski. It is still a little patchy on the slopes and although the un-pisted sections are inviting there is not always enough snow to ski without the danger of damaging your kit.

Especially near the top, where the slope is exposed to the wind the cover is a little thin. The snow is light an powdery but we'll need another snowfall before the sun soaked south facing Chery slopes are a viable powder destination. Much better are the pisted areas and the slopes over the back.

There has been a small strip of snow bashed down and where it has been packed by the piste patrol the skiing is better and safer for your bases. Off the back under the Chery Nord chair the area around the Mouflon run has had quite a bit snow blown in from the exposed south side and as the face is shaded from the sun the powder was pretty good.

We're another snowfall off a proper powder day on Mont Chery but with over two weeks 'til the lifts open properly there's plenty time for the snow to fall between now and then.
