Morzine Snow Report: 11th April 2012

Thirty centimetres of fresh overnight

featured in Snow report Author Phil Smith, Updated

It was a surprise powder day here in Morzine today with a good 30cm of snow fall yesterday and overnight. Although the last few weeks have been predominantly sunny and warm it is fairly common to get a late season snow fall. We even had snow on the ground in resort this morning and it was continuing to fall as we headed up the mountain.

Given the continued snowfall the visibility was not great so we headed to the tree runs in and around Linderets to take advantage of the contrast the trees offer. We were pleasantly surprised to be dropping into knee deep powder, you can never be too sure how much there is going to be up the mountain based on what is happening in resort.

It took us all a little while to get the feel of the powder, it’s been a week or three since we’ve done that kind of skiing. However we were soon reminded what a buzz it is to bust through deep pillows with snow billowing overhead. Initially we took in the Express Linderets lift line, nice, steep and deep in snow. There are a few little drops to hit and there was enough snow underneath to cover the landing.

Returning to the top via the Prolays Express we opted to stay closer to the Stade du Slalom blue, popping into the edges to get some great un-tracked snow. We continued to head into the sides getting fresh lines to both skiers' left and right all the way to the bottom of the express lift.

The legs were holding up reasonably well to all the powder skiing, I guess a season’s worth of skiing toughens them up a little. The snow was not the lightest but certainly could not be classed as heavy either.

We decided to head for a little coffee break nonetheless at the little creperie next to the foot of the Express Linderets. Over drinks we discussed our little taste of winter and discussed how similar it was to the first month of the season when we had powder days too numerous to count and the ski destination of choice was the Linderets bowl and the runs we had taken in that morning.

After coffee we headed up for some more of the same. Obviously the terrain was becoming progressively more and more tracked out but there were still some fresh turns to be had. We did the odd section on the piste and found the snow mostly compacted and getting progressively damper as the morning wore on. It was still really nice to ski though and the little bumps all the ski traffic had created were great to ski around, into and off!

The outlook is for more un-settled weather and relatively cold temperatures meaning we could be in for a little more snow. Great news, as there is still one more week of the season to run; things sadly come to an end on 22 April. Whatever happens between now and then it has been a brilliant season with tonnes of snow.

Bon Ski
