Morzine Snow Report: 26th December 2013

A Big Dump of Christmas Snow, thanks Santa

featured in Snow report Author James Fisher, Morzine Video Reporter Updated

Christmas Day in Morzine was a very wet affair with a huge amount of rain falling in town. On the hill and at higher altitudes this fell as snow and conditions in Avoriaz were quite good if a little wet.

Yesterday there was almost nothing to see above 1700m and with heavy holiday traffic the pistes were a little treacherous. Lower than 1700m rain fell all day and and in Morzine things were very wet and miserable.

Most of the pistes in Morzine were still shut yesterday as the snow cover still wasn't sufficient.

This morning though we awoke to find that Santa had indeed delivered, albeit a day late. There is fifteen centimetres of new snow on the ground in Morzine this morning with 30cm of fresh snow in Avoriaz. There is still nothing to see as the clouds are so low and it is still snowing but the snow conditions in both resorts will be dramatically improved.

The avalanche hazard rating this morning has risen to 4/5 and we would recommend waiting a day or two before venturing off piste as this new snow will need time to settle and it would be wise to wait and see what it is settling on.

Driving conditions in Morzine have become quite a bit more "interesting" the heavy holiday traffic and deep layer of snow on the ground means that cars will be slow moving through town.

With clear skies forecast for tomorrow and over 120cm of snow at the top of the mountain it's safe to assume Santa got our letter. Merry Christmas everyone!!
