Morzine Snow Report: 28th March 2013

Warming up for Easter as temperature drops

featured in Snow report Author Debbie Priestley, Morzine Reporter Updated

As I sit writing to you today, it’s currently raining at this low level, however, if you were to venture further up the hill, you’d find slightly different conditions. At the top of the mountain it’s actually snowing quite heavily.

Yesterday, on the other hand, was gloriously bright. Clear blue skies as far as the eye could see, warm temperatures and a gentle breeze to cool you off. I spent the majority of yesterday in Les Gets ski area on sunny pistes with soft snow. The slopes almost seemed to glitter in the light ad everyone seemed to be having a great day. The Mont Cherie side of Les Gets was a good place to start the day as the slopes are South facing and we’re a little softer than other areas, but as the day progressed we moved over to other slopes to avoid the worst of the slush, and make the most of the day. We stopped for lunch in Les Gets, and then headed over for an afternoon in Morzine. Après ski was a sunny affair too, with packed terraces and buzzing streets. It really started to feel like Spring, and then the clouds returned over night.

This morning dawned rather grey and grim, and down here at least, at just over the one thousand meter mark, it’s wet at best. The forecast is, unfortunately, for this kind of weather to continue over the next couple of days. Up high, heavy snow is forecast this afternoon, with light snow overnight and into Friday. Unfortunately this snow is coming with high winds, so it’s going to be hard work skiing out there as we move into the weekend. Saturday should see the wind drop and continued snow showers in the morning, and light snow at night, this should clear in time for Sunday and Monday, where bluebird skies should be the order of the day, combined with warmer temperatures. The snow looks set to return on Tuesday though, and I guess we’ll just have to wait and see how much! Lower down, it’s a slightly different story. Around Morzine village height we’re expecting heavy rain this afternoon, and moderate rain through into Friday. Saturday should see a slight break in the rain in the morning, but it looks set to be back in force in the evening, possibly turning into light snow overnight and into Sunday morning. Monday should be sunny and bright, and Tuesday morning looks set to be hot, around ten degrees Celsius in Morzine village. I guess it’s safest to say the next couple of days are going to be mixed as far as the weathers concerned, and you could need everything from an umbrella to a puffer jacket, and maybe even a T-shirt in town!

The end of this winter could still surprise us all, winter has clearly not let go yet, and if you remember the end of last winter, we were all skiing powder snow on the last day of the season, so who knows? The same could happen again!

With the weather set to be as varied as it’s currently looking, a waterproof jacket could be your most important piece of kit this weekend. Getting wet usually makes for a cold, and unpleasant day, however you look at it, and especially if you’re in wind. I’d also recommend taking a bag with some extra layers in it if you’re venturing far afield, as I found out yesterday, even when it’s sunny, it can still be icy and cold up there. An extra pair of gloves can be a complete blessing sometimes. When the sun comes back, you need to be a little more strategic with your skiing, start on South facing slopes (the ones which are in the Sun first) and follow the sun round the resort. This way, you should avoid the worst of the icy conditions, and the worst of the slush! It also means that most of your lift journeys should be in the sun, and that is always nice, especially for topping up that holiday tan! Do remember the sun cream though, sunburn can ruin a holiday, and is really easy to get out on the slopes! Some of the goggle lines you see around here are particularly special, especially on ski instructors faces! They also may be cool while you are on holiday, but really do look silly when you get back home to your nine till five!

Hopefully the sun will be back in full force soon, and we’ll even have a few more perfect powder days before the end of the winter, I live in hope.
