Morzine Snow Report: 8th January 2014

Mild Conditions as the Parks Get Shaped

featured in Snow report Author James Fisher, Morzine Video Reporter Updated

Great news for park rats this week but powder hounds are going to be a bit disapointed with the snow in Morzine & Avoriaz.

Today was the third mild day we have had in a row and conditions on the pistes were great, Spring like but great. The pistes were hard in the morning but softened nicely in the afternoon and on some of the sunnier slopes they were even getting a little slushy.

It has been very mild lately and this means that the pisted runs are nice and soft but the off piste is now suffering. There is a glistening melt/freeze layer on top of the fresh snow that came down at the weekend and I saw quite a few natural avalanches today. I would advise hireing a guide if heading into the off piste this week.

On the plus side as I mentioned the pistes are in good condition and running much faster than a few days ago. We rode in the Chavanettes and Mossettes bowls today and the slopes were plesently quiet and in good condition if a little lumpy on the steepest slopes.

The parks are now starting to take full shape. The Baby Park is up and running with a full line of Red, Blue and Green kickers and rails. The Arare Park has some kickers already and there is work on going there to install more features. Today the Pipe Dragon was out for the first time shaping the pipe. We expect it to be open by the weekend.

It has been mild and beautiful for skiiing and snowboarding today but fortunately the teperatures are dropping as the week goes on and we might get some more snow by the beginning of next week. Spring is great but not in January.
