Snow And Sunshine For Half Term in Morzine

Perfect conditions for the families arriving in town this week

featured in Snow report Author Giles Towler, Morzine Reporter Updated

After heavy snowfall last week the skies have cleared for one of the busiest weeks of the season, giving us a good snow depth of between 100cm and 130cm in Avoriaz. Following the slow start to the season conditions are now excellent across the ski area.

The weather has warmed up considerably and it feels almost spring like up the mountain at the moment, perfect for all the children in ski schools this week who might not enjoy cold and windy weather. It’s also perfect for sunny park laps for those wishing to escape the crowds on the slopes.

Almost all the pistes are now open throughout the Portes Du Soleil, meaning that it is possible to venture further afield for quieter slopes. Mont Chery in Les Gets is a firm favourite for a more peaceful day. Torgon also usually has less crowded slopes and from here it is possible to work round to Morgins and Champoussin which are also usually quieter than the areas around Avoriaz. Find your way our on the Piste Maps.

The conditions on the pistes are very good at the moment. There is good snow cover on all slopes, although it does tend to get quite chopped up by the afternoon. With the current warmer temperatures the snow does soften up significantly in the afternoon, especially in the less shaded areas.

To avoid long lift queues the best times to get up the mountain are either first thing in the morning, when people are still getting their children ready for ski school, or at lunch time. Super Morzine tends to get quite crowded with people heading from Morzine to Avoriaz, so to avoid any queues get the M bus to Ardent, which is usually a quicker way to head up to Lindarets.

Thanks to the improved snow recently the Chapelle park in Avoriaz and the park on Super Chatel are taking shape nicely. The half pipe in Avoriaz has also been completed and the features in The Stash are now mostly open, although the ski schools have a habit of taking processions of children through The Stash so be warned! The park on Mont Chery in Les Gets has still not been built yet. [Read more about Snowparks].

Most of the off piste sectors have now been tracked out. The conditions last week were mostly good, although it was still possible to hit the occasional rock just below the surface. Hopefully it won’t be too long till the next snowfall. The current warmer weather has made the snow pack more unstable, so it is not a good idea to go looking for un-tracked snow. If in doubt ski with a guide or book a lesson to go off piste.

It’s been perfect conditions so far this week and the forecast suggests that it will continue for the next few days.
