Morzine Snow Report: 14th March 2015

We were hoping for a fresh little dump of snow, but it never came!

At the time of writing of our last report, the forecast promised almost 17 cm of snow on Friday up in Avoriaz. Needless to say, the number of centimetres forecast slowly decreased to nothing over the week, and with temperatures rising all we can expect snow is a couple of light rain showers. Is the end of the season on it’s way?

Although guests this week won’t be enjoying some of the fresh stuff, piste conditions are still good. Colder temperatures overnight have been causing pistes to be hard-packed in the morning, which can feel like and ice-skating rink in some patches. However, as the sun shines down all day long the pistes slowly turn to softer, slushier snow. Suncream has been a must in this sunny springtime weather, and the clear skies always encourage guests to use their Portes Du Soleil lift pass to it’s full extent. The only place we found muddy snow turning into ground was on the other side of Super Châtel on the way down to Morgins!

It’s been a busy week for season workers and locals in Morzine, who have enjoyed two of the biggest events on the Morzine calendar. The Rhythm Sessions hosted by Slopestyle Snowboard shop on Wednesday invited snowboarders to sign up and get creative in a skate-style snowpark jam format competition, to win big prizes from sponsors Volcom, Rome Snowboards and Skull Candy. The Cavern 24/7 Film Festival also came around, showing their films, which were shot over the space of a week to be put up for a public vote on Thursday night. Nearly 800 people turned up to watch the films and take part in the charity event to raise funds for the new skatepark in the centre of Morzine, with the winners at the end of the night taking home an €1000 cash prize courtesy of sponsors EPIC TV.

This week the sun isn’t so prominent, with start of week looking overcast for the most part. Light rain showers may fall on Tuesday, but it won’t be much more than a couple of centimetres on the ground. The best weather to enjoy the slopes is Monday and Wednesday morning, so make sure you get up and out of bed to get some of that sunshine.

Snowpark conditions are excellent, and anyone on holiday looking to improve in freestyle skiing or snowboarding will be spoilt by the variety and number of good snowparks here in the Portes Du Soleil. Make sure you take a look at the piste map, and make your way over to the Smooth Park in no time at all thanks to the brand new linking chairlifts.

There’s still much skiing to be enjoyed here in the Portes Du Soleil for a while yet!
