Morzine Snow Report: 20th February 2015

Make the most of this lush springtime weather, because there’s more snow on the way this weekend!

We can’t deny that we haven’t enjoyed the rays of sunshine and warmer temperatures in the past two weeks, but the truth is that these spring-like conditions don’t bode well for the rest of the season.

Surely all the snow wasn’t going to melt away in February? Thankfully the forecast is predicting some moderate to heavy snowfall over the weekend, treating skiers and snowboarders on holiday next week to some fresh snow and powder runs off-piste.

The slopes have been bustling with skiers and snowboarders young and old this week, with families and groups of friends make the most of the half-term break. The snowparks in Avoriaz, Châtel and Mt. Chery have been the destination for many season workers looking to avoid lift queues and make the most of the sunshine and excellent snowpark conditions, while holidaymakers have been enjoying good pistes across the extent of the Portes Du Soleil. Avoriaz and Morzine have been hosting a whole week of evening events including torchlit descents, fireworks displays, light shows and snowman building contests to entertain all the family, and make it a break away to remember.

The sun and clear skies will be gone by Saturday, with heavy snowfall in the later afternoon. Around 40 cm is predicted to fall on Saturday and Monday with almost a metre of snow predicted up to fall in total up until Tuesday!

If you’re travelling on the roads this weekend, be sure to have those snow chains ready in your car because there is high chance you will need them – especially if your vehicle isn’t fitted with winter tyres. The transfer drivers in resorts across the Portes Du Soleil know all too well of the cold hands and frustration of snow chains, and will have their gloves and warm jackets ready to go. The trend of the snowfall this season has seen all the large dumps of snow fall in the Portes Du Soleil at the weekend when the roads are at their busiest, but preparation, awareness and sensible driving will help make sure that you, your family or your guests have a safe journey to and from the airport.

The overcast and snowy weather will mean that although the new snow on the slopes will make for some fun powder skiing, the visibility will be poor up high. Lower tree runs in Morzine, Les Gets and Mt. Chery and over in Les Lindarets Avoriaz are the best places to make the most of the conditions, and enjoy the fresh, fluffy stuff.

Keep an eye on the weather - you never know the sun may make another appearance at the end of the week!
