Morzine Snow Report: 20th February 2016

After the busy half term week, the snow is still looking good.

Despite the huge crowds of the past week there has been enough snow in the last few days to keep things topped up.

Over the past week light snow has continued to fall and conditions have remained good despite the high number of visitors due to the school holidays. Snow has continued to fall most of Saturday, with approximately 10 centimetres of snow falling during the day.

Sunday and Monday are expected to bring sunny skies with moderate to heavy snow forecast for the majority of next week.

The majority of pistes currently have good snow cover and the coming week should bring good off piste conditions, with the best visibility expected on Wednesday and the following weekend.

The slopes will still be busy this week due to yet more school holidays, although not as bad as last week. Avoriaz is usually the busiest area, especially around Lindarets if visibility is bad. There are however other areas which should remain quieter. On the Pleney side of Morzine Nyon is usually relatively crowd free. On the Avoriaz side heading further afield is the best way to avoid the busier slopes. The Linga area is a good place to start, with good snow, a fast lift system and less crowds. Continuing in this direction leads to Torgon and Morgins which should also be quieter. Switzerland is generally quieter than Avoriaz, so Les Crosets and Champery are also good places to head to.

In Avoriaz, currently 33 out of 34 lifts are open and 49 out of 53 runs are open. The snow depth at the lower levels is approximately 140cm and 230cm on the higher slopes.

It remains to be seen how much snow will fall this coming week but the temperatures are expected to remain low so that the snow conditions should remain good, and the high winds of the past couple of weeks have died down, allowing the off piste conditions to improve. Although most of the readily accessible off piste has been well tracked by now, the snowfall from the past couple of days should have made conditions better.

Over in Les Gets, the lower pistes have not fared quite as well. There is only approximately 60cm at the bottom of the pistes, but conditions on the higher slopes are considerably better with an approximate depth of 190cm, and all lifts are open.

Across town from the main slopes of Les Gets is Mt Chery, which usually has good conditions and is always quieter than the slopes on the opposite side. It is a five minute walk, or there is a "petit train" if you do not want to walk with your skis. It also has its own snow park and, on a clear day, the best views of Mt Blanc in the area. It is, however, important to ensure you have left enough time to return to Morzine or Avoriaz at the end of a day's skiing!

The roads have been kept clear, meaning that there shouldn't be any major problems getting to and from resort. However, there were a lot of drivers last weekend who were not prepared for the conditions on their arrival, causing accidents and delays, so if you are planning to drive to resort make sure that you have the correct tires as well as snow chains, and check the forecast as often as possible.
