Morzine Snow Report: 21st December 2014

The sun comes out at the start of the first busy week

A day of heavy rain in Morzine on Saturday leading in to the busy Christmas week had skiers looking hopefully to Avoriaz to see if the clouds would clear to show some fresh snow.

Sunday dawned with blue skies and some new snow visible on the higher peaks. With only Avoriaz open at the moment due to a lack of snow, the bus service to the bottom of Prodains was running extra buses to cope with the demand, but there are still long queues in the morning. The two year old Prodains lift was proving its worth, however, as queues at the bottom were not too long and it took a few minutes to get on the lift, as opposed to the old lift which could take an hour or more to get on.

Once in Avoriaz, the queues are fairly long for the lifts but the slopes, whilst crowded, are not as bad as might be feared, considering how little is open at the moment. This is due in part to the limiting of ski pass sales at the moment - whilst the lift pass office are honouring all prepaid passes they are currently not selling week passes and limiting day passes to 14,000 a day. Whilst these may leave some people disappointed it is a necessary measure to keep the mountain from becoming overcrowded.

Fresh snow has fallen, with a dusting down to the bottom of the Prodains. Whilst this run still does not have enough snow to be skied on, the runs higher up, which had a better dumping of snow yesterday, have benefited hugely. The snow on the higher slopes still has a few stones, but is now mostly hard packed snow with a few areas of ice.

With a slow start to the season the lift company have been working wonders with what they have, with snow moved to make a small nursery area in Morzine at the bottom of the Pleney and snow shovelled around in Avoriaz to improve links, such as as the link between the Arare area and the Fornet area.

With more snow expected around Christmas day and the following week, Morzine can hopefully get back on track and get everything opened as soon as possible.
