Morzine Snow Report: 26th January 2015

featured in Snow report Author Ally MacLeod, Morzine Reporter Updated

Anyone visiting the Portes Du Soleil this past week would have enjoyed good snow on piste and off piste in most areas of Morzine, Les Gets and Avoriaz, but we still wouldn’t mind more of it..

Lucky for us here the forecast is predicting another little dump tonight which should freshen up the slopes once again, treating anyone arriving this past weekend with the new snow needed to cover those patches of ice once again. There is also bizarrely huge amount forecast for the end of the week – if you’ve haven’t already seen it we’re currently fore cast about a metre of snow falling later on in the week!

The past week has of snow has allowed more diverse conditions for skiers and snowboarders pushing and enjoying different aspects of these snowsports. Experienced powder hounds have been equipping themselves with their avalanche gear to enjoy touring and skiing and snowboarding off-piste, while the Avoriaz Snowzone team have been making good work of developing the snow parks.

Avoriaz is famously known for being quick off the block to start building the snow parks, and this year was no exception. The Avoriaz Snowzone team managed to build a line of blue kickers and rails and boxes in the Chapelle park, as well as making a unique feature out an old Avoriaz cable car. Now, because of recent helpings of new snow last week the Chapelle park has much more to offer, with a line of green, blue and red kickers to meet different experience levels of park skiers and snowboarders. The famous Burton Stash park was turned into the powdery wooden playground it was built to be, with giant wall rides and wooden rails it needed large amounts of snow to be at it’s best – hopefully the dump at the end of the week will make it so.

The weather this week is initially sunny with clouds rolling in and a and dusting of snow here and there, but later on towards Thursday the conditions are turning to be particularly hostile, with strong winds, reduced visibility and around half a metre of snow falling from Wednesday night until Thursday night, it going to make tough going out on the mountain.

With such large volumes of snow falling, it is likely that the avalanche risk will shoot up to 5 around the Portes Du Soleil, making the pistes the safest place to be to enjoy the best of the new snowfall, especially if you have never taken part in avalanche safety training. Don’t get caught out - we all love the powder but its easy to get carried away and forget the dangers and necessary precautions that even the most experienced of skiers, such as those in the dedicated Avoriaz Safety Team, take to ensure that they remain safe in extreme conditions.

Ski smart, and you, your friends and your family will enjoy the best of what the Portes Du Soleil has to offer!
