Sunny weather set to continue in Morzine

Fantastic blue skies throughout the Portes du Soleil

featured in Snow report Author Giles Towler, Morzine Reporter Updated

There has been nothing but sunshine and warm weather in Morzine for the past week and a half, and it doesn’t look like ending for the next few days at least.

The busy February holidays are well under way, with busier slopes and longer lift queues than normal in Morzine and Les Gets. However, there are ways to avoid the worst of the crowds. Most families out on holiday tend to stop skiing over lunch, so heading up at about 13:00 usually means slightly less crowds.

Certain areas are also significantly quieter. Anyone with a car can drive out of Morzine and down to the Grande Terche ski area, which is always a lot quieter than the man parts of Morzine and Les Gets, due to it’s location out of town. Even further afield, but still included on the Portes Du Soleil lift pass, is Chapelle D’Abondance, over near Chatel, which is also a lot quieter. The quietest areas that can be reached without a car are Mt Chery in Les Gets, which has quieter pistes, great views, good snow and sunshine throughout the day, and some areas of Switzerland, such as Torgon.

However, skiers will have to endure some lengthy lift queues to get over there. For anyone who likes that sort of thing, the half pipe in Avoriaz is currently in excellent condition and pretty quiet. It does tend to soften up a bit too much by around midday, however, so head up early if you want to ride it. At the other end of the scale, The Stash has been very busy for the past few days. A lot of ski schools head there, and it does get crowded. Work has been continuing in the Chapelle park in Avoriaz, and it is currently in excellent condition.

The busiest areas at the moment are the Pleney, due to the number of ski schools around there, and Lindarets, which always seems to attract the crowds. Despite the warm weather, the snow is still holding up quite well. There is still a metre and a half of snow on the pistes at 1800m, and almost two and a half metres on the highest parts of Avoriaz. The conditions are, for the most part, slushy due to the high temperature (it has been up to about 18C on some days), with slushy moguls forming on the busier pistes, particularly around Lindarets. The snow tends to be slightly icy in the shade, so it’s important to be aware of the sudden changes that can occur. It has been warm enough to head up in a hoody for the past week, and suncream has been a requirement.

The warm weather looks set to continue for the next week, with next Friday looking like it could have some fresh snow. Next week looks set to be another busy week, although hopefully things will start to quieten down after that. Despite the spring conditions for the past couple of weeks, there is still half of the winter season to go. The snow will definitely return, hopefully at the end of next week. Morzine and Les Gets has been spoilt for snow so far this year, and this has meant that the warm weather is not a problem for the snow cover at the moment. In some respects it has been good to have some nice, sunny weather after all the snowfall of the past month and a half, but everyone will be pleased to see the snow return next week.
