Shared Transfer Transfers for Morzine

For the majority of visitors flying to Morzine, we would choose Geneva Airport plus a pre-booked transfer.

Morzine's proximity to Geneva is one of the resort's great practical advantages. There is plenty of competition between transfer companies, journey times are relatively short and fares can be very reasonable.

For one or two people, a shared shuttle generally provides the best balance between price and convenience.

For families and groups, compare the total cost with a private transfer rather than assuming that buying individual shared seats is cheaper.

And unless you intend to explore well beyond Morzine, think carefully before hiring a car. Once you are in resort, the free local buses, walking routes and lift system make it perfectly practical to spend a week's ski holiday without one.

The most important thing is to understand what you are booking.

A €20 express transfer to a fixed stop, a €40 shared door-to-door minibus and a €250 private vehicle are three quite different products, even though all of them may appear in search results under “Geneva to Morzine transfers”.

Check the final drop-off point, waiting arrangements, luggage allowance, flight-delay policy and total cost for your party.

That is why it is worth comparing what the service actually includes, rather than choosing purely on the advertised starting price.

Do that before travelling and the final 80km from Geneva to Morzine should be one of the easier parts of your journey.

Staying in Morzine, Montriond, Les Gets or Avoriaz?

Check the exact destination before you book.

“Morzine transfer” is sometimes used fairly loosely for services covering several resorts and villages in this part of the Portes du Soleil.

Morzine, Les Gets, Montriond and Avoriaz are not interchangeable destinations.

Les Gets sits on the other side of the Col des Gets.

Montriond lies just below Morzine and extends towards Lake Montriond and Ardent.

Avoriaz is the high-altitude resort above Morzine and is largely car-free. Depending on your accommodation and transfer service, Avoriaz passengers may be taken to a designated resort reception point rather than directly to the door.

The Prodains cable car is another important transfer point. It connects the valley floor below Avoriaz with the resort above and is served by some Geneva transfer services. Alpy Transfers, for example, includes Prodains among its fixed Morzine-area express stops.

That avoids discovering at Geneva Airport that your inexpensive “Morzine transfer” actually leaves you several kilometres from your chalet.

Geneva International Airport (GVA) is the main gateway to Morzine.

The airport is around 75km from the resort and approximately 1 hour 15 minutes away. In practice, transfer companies commonly quote around 1 hour 30 minutes, which allows a little more realistically for traffic and the journey into resort.

Morzine's location is one of its advantages. Unlike resorts deep in say the Tarentaise valley, there is no long motorway journey followed by an extended climb up a single resort access road.

That does not mean journey times are guaranteed. Snow, weekend traffic, congestion around Geneva and busy holiday changeover days can all add time.

Average transfer times and distances from the main airports to Morzine (the values are approximate and can be affected by snow, bad weather or peak holiday times):

A scheduled or express shuttle is normally the cheapest straightforward way to travel from Geneva Airport to Morzine.

These services operate to a timetable and generally use fixed drop-off points rather than taking every passenger directly to their accommodation.

Most services use points including Morzine Gare Routière and the Prodains cable car (for Avoriaz especially).

Some of these services operate primarily during the winter ski season, so check carefully if you are visiting in summer or between seasons. Regular Geneva Airport bus-transfer services operate during winter.

Choose an express or scheduled transfer if: price matters more than door-to-door convenience, you are travelling alone or as a couple, your flight fits the timetable and your accommodation is reasonably close to one of the stops.

If you have several suitcases, children or a chalet on the edge of town, saving €10–€20 on the airport transfer may be less attractive if you then need another taxi at the Morzine end.

Shared transfers are particularly common between Geneva and Morzine.

You travel in a minibus or coach with passengers arriving at approximately the same time and heading towards Morzine, Les Gets, Avoriaz or nearby villages.

Many shared services will take you to your accommodation, although you may have to wait at Geneva for other passengers and there can be several drop-offs before you reach your own address.

The main advantage is price. For one or two people, a shared transfer can provide a useful compromise between the cost of a coach and the convenience of a private vehicle.

The compromise is that you may need to wait at the airport while other passengers arrive, and the vehicle may make several stops once it reaches the resort.

Allow more time than you would for a private transfer, particularly on Saturdays.

Check what “shared” actually means

This is important when comparing prices.

A scheduled shared coach generally departs at a fixed time and uses predetermined stops.

A shared door-to-door transfer usually groups passengers according to flight times and then makes several accommodation drop-offs around the resort.

Two journeys both advertised as “shared airport transfers” can therefore provide quite different levels of convenience.

Before booking, check:

• whether you are taken to your accommodation or a bus stop
• the maximum expected airport waiting time
• whether other resorts are served by the same vehicle
• what happens if your flight is delayed
• whether ski equipment is included

With a private transfer, the vehicle is reserved for you and your travelling party.

The driver normally meets you at Geneva Airport and takes you directly to your hotel, apartment or chalet. There is no need to wait for unrelated passengers and no series of other people's accommodation stops once you reach Morzine.

This is particularly useful if:

• you are travelling as a family or group
• you have young children
• you have lots of luggage
• you are carrying skis, snowboards or bikes
• your flight arrives very early or late
• your accommodation is away from the main transfer stops.

Private Geneva–Morzine prices vary by vehicle size, date and operator, but roughly €200–€300 for a standard vehicle is a useful budgeting figure.

Always provide your flight number when booking so the operator can monitor your arrival.

If you need child seats, have bikes or unusually large luggage, tell the transfer company in advance rather than assuming the standard vehicle will accommodate everything.

Using public transport can help keep the costs down on your trip to Morzine. However, it can take considerably longer than a shared or private transfer as buses usually stop several times along the way and you will need to make a connection in Cluses or Thonon, the nearest transport hubs in the area.

How do you get from Geneva airport to Morzine using public transport?

Public bus transfers run from Geneva airport to Thonon-les-Bains, a town by Lake Leman and on the route to Morzine. From Thonon, there are regular buses to Morzine, stopping in Saint-Jean-d'Aulps along the way and ending in Les Gets. The Thonon to Morzine bus transfer time is around 45min.

Often, yes.

The important comparison is not between one €30 shared ticket and one €250 private transfer. It is between the total shared cost for your entire party and the price of the vehicle.

Six people paying €45 each would spend €270.

At that point, a private transfer may cost very little more, or even less, while giving you your own vehicle and a direct journey.

The calculation becomes particularly relevant when travelling with children or lots of luggage, because a private transfer also removes airport waiting time and intermediate stops.

For four or more people, it is therefore always worth asking for a private quote before booking individual seats.

This is one of the things worth checking before booking the cheapest transfer.

Private companies normally ask for your flight number and monitor the flight's arrival.

Shared services operate differently. Some allocate arriving passengers to a transfer after their scheduled flight arrival time. If a passenger misses the allocated standard transfer, they may be moved to the next available departure subject to a rescue fee.

Different operators have different policies.

Before booking, check what happens after a delayed flight, how long the company waits, whether you are guaranteed a later vehicle and when the final service leaves Geneva.

This is especially important for evening arrivals.

A cheap shuttle fare is much less useful if a delayed flight means missing the last transfer and having to arrange a private vehicle at short notice.

Morzine does not have a railway station.

The nearest useful railheads are Thonon-les-Bains and Cluses, with bus connections from both into the resort. The Y91 links Thonon with Morzine, while the Y92 runs between Cluses and Morzine.

If travelling from Geneva, Thonon is usually the more logical rail route.

The Léman Express connects Geneva with Thonon-les-Bains. Current September 2026 timetables show direct Geneva Cornavin–Thonon journeys taking around 58 minutes. From Thonon, you then continue by bus into the Vallée d'Aulps and Morzine.

Geneva Airport itself has rail connections into central Geneva, so the whole journey is possible by public transport.

It is not, however, particularly convenient as an airport transfer. You need to move from the airport into Geneva, change onto a train for Thonon and then change again onto the bus for Morzine.

For somebody simply stepping off a flight at Geneva Airport, a direct shared transfer will normally be both quicker and simpler.

Rail becomes more interesting if you are already travelling around Europe by train.

Lastly, for the avoidance of doubt, Eurostar services from London do not currently serve Geneva or anywhere nearby. Eurostar Snow is a winter ski service that runs to the Tarentaise valley resorts, which is not a convenient route for accessing the Northern Alps resorts like Chamonix, Morzine, or Avoriaz.

Hiring a car gives you flexibility, but you do not automatically need one for a holiday in Morzine.

The Geneva–Morzine drive is relatively short, so car hire can make sense if you want to explore the wider region independently.

It can be particularly useful if you intend to visit places such as Lake Geneva, Samoëns, Chamonix or other parts of Haute-Savoie, or if your accommodation is outside the centre of Morzine.

If you are simply coming for a week's skiing, however, a transfer is often easier. Once you include the hire charge, fuel, parking and winter equipment, paying for a car that spends most of the holiday parked outside the chalet may make little sense.

There are two things to think about in winter.

First, you need to be comfortable driving in snow and ice.

Second, winter equipment is a legal requirement in Haute-Savoie between 1 November and 31 March. Vehicles must meet the applicable winter-equipment rules, using compliant winter tyres or carrying the required chains or snow socks. Check what your rental company provides rather than assuming the cheapest car automatically includes suitable equipment.

And be advised that the car rental companies have different levels of service/equipment depending on whether you hire on the French side of Geneva Airport (in France) or the Swiss side, yes there are different legal requirements affecting which equipment is provided.

For most visitors staying in Morzine itself, no.

The resort operates free local shuttle buses, serving different parts of the village during the winter and summer seasons.

There are also wider valley services connecting places including Les Gets, Montriond, Saint-Jean-d'Aulps, Le Biot and surrounding villages. The summer Balad'Aulps service, for example, serves the wider valley as well as Morzine.

For skiers, Morzine's main Pleney and Super Morzine lifts are in or close to the town centre, while buses connect other important access points such as Nyon and the Prodains cable car for Avoriaz.

If your accommodation is well positioned, walking plus resort buses will usually cover most everyday journeys.

A car is most useful if you are staying outside the main bus network or want to make regular journeys beyond the resort.

Morzine transfer companies are accustomed to carrying ski and snowboard equipment.

Nevertheless, tell the operator what you are bringing.

Eight passengers plus eight suitcases and several ski bags require significantly more luggage space than eight people travelling with hand luggage.

Some operators specifically include ski and snowboard equipment. Alpine Fleet, for example, says ski and snowboard luggage is included on its Geneva–Morzine services.

Bikes require more planning.

Morzine is one of Europe's major mountain-biking destinations, so several local transfer companies are experienced in carrying bike bags and boxed bikes, particularly in summer.

Even so, always book bike transport in advance. Do not arrive with four bike boxes and assume a standard minibus will have sufficient space.

Families should compare private and shared transfers carefully.

For two adults and two or three children, the combined price of individual shared fares may already represent a large part of the cost of a private vehicle.

Private transport also avoids waiting for other passengers and takes the family directly to the accommodation.

Tell the company the children's ages and request suitable child seats when required.

Bear in mind that coaches and minibuses may be subject to different child-restraint rules. Some operators also have their own policies on child seats, so check rather than assuming.

Lyon Saint-Exupéry is a “possible” alternative to Geneva, but the journey is substantially longer. We've included this advice here as the question of how to achieve the feat of arranging Lyon to/from Morzine transfers has come up every year for years on end.

Lyon Airport is around 205km and 2 hours 20 minutes from Morzine in normal road conditions.

Nonetheless, whatever you may have saved on flight prices (which would be a real surprise in the first place) you will more than pay for in extra transfer costs and time once you land.

There are fewer shared services than from Geneva, and private transfers will generally cost more because of the distance.

Lyon might still make sense if:

• there is a substantially better flight
• you are combining Morzine with another part of France
• you are hiring a car
• your flight times make the Geneva alternatives inconvenient

But compare the entire journey before booking.

A cheaper flight into Lyon can easily become a more expensive trip once the additional transfer cost and travelling time are taken into account.

Overall, if it's not yet absolutely clear already, we're not commenting on Lyon Airport to Morzine as a recommendation to actually attempt but rather as a recommendation to avoid it.

Our advice is not to start your “adventure holiday” in Lyon, just go to Geneva like everyone else, if you possibly can. Unless it's for a bet. Or a dare. Or you definitely want to hire a car.

Chambéry

Chambéry is geographically closer to Morzine than Lyon or Grenoble, with a distance of around 130km and a normal transfer time of approximately 1 hour 40 minutes.

The limitation is the flight schedule. Chambéry is a much smaller airport and its ski traffic is heavily concentrated around seasonal winter routes and weekend operations.

If a convenient direct flight exists from your departure airport, it can work well. Otherwise Geneva normally offers much greater choice.

Grenoble

Grenoble Airport is around 208km from Morzine and about 2 hours 20 minutes by road in good conditions.

It is primarily a winter airport and is more naturally positioned for resorts in the Isère and southern French Alps.

If you can actually get to Morzine from Grenoble at the relative time, there is generally little reason to choose it ahead of Geneva unless the flight itself is particularly convenient or inexpensive. As with Lyon, check your onward transport before purchasing the flight.

Yes, but Italian airports are not normally sensible gateways for Morzine.

Morzine sits north of the Mont Blanc massif, relatively close to Lake Geneva and the Swiss border. Although Turin and Milan may not look exceptionally distant on a map, getting from them to Morzine involves a much longer Alpine road journey.

There are also far fewer shared-transfer services.

An Italian airport generally makes sense only if Italy is part of a wider trip, you have found an unusually convenient flight or you are already planning to hire a car.

For a straightforward Morzine holiday, Geneva is almost always easier.

For most people, the decision is relatively straightforward:

• Travelling alone on a budget: look for a fixed-stop express transfer from Geneva.
• One or two people who want door-to-door transport: compare a shared door-to-door shuttle with the express services.
• A family: compare shared fares with the price of one private vehicle.
• Four or more adults: always check a private-transfer quote; the per-person cost can be surprisingly competitive.
• Arriving very late or leaving very early: private transfer is usually the easiest option.
• Travelling with lots of equipment: private transport gives you more control, but tell the operator what you're carrying.
• Travelling with bikes: use an operator that accepts bike boxes and reserve the space in advance.
• Want the lowest environmental impact and aren't in a hurry: investigate the train. But a hybrid of train to Geneva and scheduled coach is the better combo.
• Planning to explore well beyond the Morzine valley: consider hiring a car instead.
• Want to use public transport: travel via Thonon-les-Bains or Cluses and connect with the local bus, but allow considerably longer than for a direct airport transfer.
