Morzine Snow Report: 27th February 2014

Snowfall Last Night & Blue Skies Today but Beware the Off-Piste

featured in Snow report Author James Fisher, Morzine Video Reporter Updated

There was a fresh five to ten centimetres of snow on the ground in Morzine this morning and more up in Avoriaz. The sun was starting to part the clouds that had brought last night's white gift by 8am and all was set for a great day on the hill.

Myself and some friends headed off to Nyon as early as we could and by 8.45 there was already a queue for the bubble. The buses in town were full and it looked like we weren't the only ones looking forward to the new snow.

In Nyon the snow was good but perhaps a little light. Yesterday's tracks could be clearly discerned under the new layer and the powder in the off-piste sluffed away a little too easily to reveal the chop underneath.

Over in Avoriaz reports were coming in from locals that there had been some avalanche activity on the very popular and usually very stable run known as "Sattellite" which comes down through the trees to the skiers right of the Chaux Fleuries chairlift. Although not a full slide there is evidence of "creep" on the slope and the snow-layer that has slid has gone down to the ground.

So it would seem that the pistes are perhaps a better option today. The sun is now shining in Morzine and Avoriaz and the pistes this morning had a layer of fresh snow on top of a smooth stable base. Over in Les Gets Sally from The Snow Institute Morzine tells us that the pistes are in great condition and with more snow forecast for the next week March is looking good.

Thanks to Sally at The Snow Institute Morzine & Piers Wilson for some of today's pics.
