Fire destroys the top of the Pleney gondola

Dismantling work may be the cause of the accident

39 firefighters were involved in putting out a fire yesterday that has destroyed the top of the Pleney cable car in Morzine. The alarm was raised yesterday morning as people below in town saw the flames high up on the mountain side.

The fire was under control by 6am and, although investigations are still under way as to the cause of the fire, it is thought that it may have been caused by the ongoing work to remove the cable car.

The location, reached only by fire road, made it difficult to access for the fire crews, but thankfully they managed to save the snack restaurant directly next to it, which just suffered from a small amount of damage to the roof. A telecommunication tower was however not so lucky and was destroyed.

The gondola is being replaced by a new, faster lift and so was due to be completely removed at some point this summer anyway.
