Morzine Snow Report: 2nd March 2012

Still very mild

featured in Snow report Author Phil Smith, Updated

It was another spring like day in Morzine today, so spring like I do not think it froze over night! We are due for a return to winter conditions at the end of the weekend though. Saturday will be pretty much the same as today, highs of around 14 degrees with predominantly blue skies. The change is due Sunday/ Monday with precipitation and a rain snow limit down to 900m, well below resort height. As much as I like the spring conditions I’ll be well chuffed if we get lots of new fresh snow to play in.

Today we slapped on the sun cream and went for a quick blast. We were a little hindered by the Grand Combe lift up to the top of the Hauts Forts being shut and the queue for the Prodains telepherique was huge. Thinking the Combe would open at some point or the queue would die down we did a lap of the Verare chair and the Le Crot blue. The piste was really nice, well groomed and relatively soft given that it had not frozen overnight.

Our little plan did not work, the lift didn’t open and the queue for the telepherique didn’t shrink. So we headed off to Ardent to see if we could access the mountain that way, and we could. Once up top we headed into the Secteur Chavanette for a few laps of the Canyon du Schott and Marmotte Snowcross zones. Pretty much everywhere was covered in moguls, which is fun if you like that kind of thing. I do like that kind which makes me question the saying “good at what you like, like what you're good at”.

We did a few piste runs also, using the Choucas and TK Chavanette drag lift to get up top. The pistes were fairly well chopped up by this point, loads of mini slush moguls everywhere.

Fancying a change of scene we used the Cubore lift to get into the Linderets valley. After a long run down the blue Abricotine we were at the bottom of the Mossettes chair ready for a lift up to the border with Switzerland. Unfortunately so were a stack of other people but we didn't have to wait too long to get on the lift – my tolerance for queuing must be diminishing with living in mainland Europe.

The aspect dropping into Les Crosets from the Mossettes is south facing so things were super slushy here, fortunately not sticky though. The runs down from the new Crosets II chair were the pick of the day. They do not get exposed to the sun for so long. They are relatively steep for reds but nice and wide so not a problem really.

It was a nice ski day out in the sun today. My advice on these kinds of days is to ski for as long as possible until the legs cannot take any more then stop for a long lunch in the sun.

Bon Ski
