Morzine Snow Report: 6th February 2015

Lots of sun on the forecast next week after a 5ft dump the week before

The snow storm is over for now, and it looks like the skies are clearing and temperatures are rising over the weekend to bring in a bright week of sunshine and bluebird days.

The past two weeks, despite being plagued with a few days of white out conditions have been a really special time to enjoy the spectacular terrain and variety of skiing in the Portes Du Soleil.

Around 5ft of snow fell during the storm in the end, giving us the best conditions in the resorts so far this year. Snow hung off every twig, and icicles have been dripping off every ledge, creating beautiful scenes that have seen many people dubbing Morzine, Les Gets and Avoriaz as ‘Narnia’!

Deep powder has been enjoyed by those who chase the really, fluffy white stuff, although awareness of avalanches has been strongly promoted throughout this time in order to keep as many skiers and snowboarders safe. The rocky start to the season followed by the mammoth dump has caused the snowpack to be especially unstable – meaning a significantly high avalanche risk on even some of the known ‘safe’ faces.

The Avoriaz Safety Team’s work was broadcast on local news channel France 3 Alpes, recognising the PIDA (avalanche operational response plan) carried out in the area of Crozats in Avoriaz. Over 50kg of explosives were packed onboard the helicopter for the team to drop at 11 different points to trigger avalanches. This recognised work of setting off controlled avalanches helps to keep the mountain safe for all of us.

The up coming week looks to be a great blessing for the fair weather skiers and sun worshippers among us, with pleasant piste conditions and not a cloud in sight, we suggest you take a backpack with some picnic supplies and water and utilise your Portes Du Soleil ski pass to it’s full potential. After all, there are few places where you can ski all day long across two different countries and not do the same run twice.

The powder hounds who were hoping to enjoy the last few spots of untouched snow may be disappointed this weekend, but snowboarders and skiers who enjoy the challenge of the snowparks will be doing a dance of joy. If you’re a newbie to the snowpark but are itching to try something new, why not book a freestyle ski or snowboard lesson? Avoriaz Alpine Ski School and Evolution 2 Ski School are the guys to go to if you’re looking to improve your freestyle skills on skis and Mint Snowboarding and REAL snowboarding both offer reasonably-priced freestyle sessions for both private or group lessons for snowboarders.

The Chapelle Park in Avoriaz offers progressive features at varied levels, while the Arare Park is a challenging place for experienced park riders to go big or go home! Regular and seasoned visitors of the Portes Du Soleil will be pleased to know the chairlift directly linking the Smoothpark in Châtel to the Portes Du Soleil has now been opened too, banishing the need to take the bus across the town to reach this unique and much-loved snowpark.

Enjoy the sun while it lasts, and take this opportunity to get that goggle tan going!
