Week of sunshine and warm weather in Morzine

Fantastic bluebird conditions throughout the Portes du Soleil

Following a tempestuous weekend that saw many of the higher lifts closed due to high winds, the weather in Morzine and Les Gets settled down, and the sun came out from Tuesday onward.

The week started with an overcast Monday, although there was some fresh snow as well. From Tuesday onwards, however, things changed drastically. While there have been sunny days earlier this year, Tuesday marked the start of the longest period of fine weather the resort has experienced since the start of the year.

The temperature has been getting as high as 12C to 14C, meaning that in the afternoons the snow has been getting slushier. The higher temperatures and sunny weather should not be a cause for concern for people heading out in the next few days, however. The current conditions on the pistes are excellent. The snow cover at the moment ranges from o160cm on lower pistes, all the way up to 260cm on higher pistes. The condition of the snow at the moment is packed powder. There may be some icy patches early in the morning or in shaded areas that do not get as much sunshine, but overall the snow is as good as you could hope for. The soft snow does lead to some mogul patches forming, but the piste bashers smooth everything out regularly.

Some of the best areas to head to on the Morzine/Les Gets side to really make the most of the sunshine are Mt Chery and Nyon as they get sunshine throughout the day. Mt Chery is, as ever, one of the quieter areas and a good place to head in the next couple of weeks when the crowds fill up some of the other areas, such as Pleney. Over on the Super Morzine side, heading over towards Les Crosets and Super Chatel lets skiers make the most of the sunshine. Conditions are perfect at the moment to embark on the full Portes Du Soleil Circuit, and places such as Torgon, Morgins and Champoussin are some of the best places to enjoy the sunshine and quieter slopes.

The excellent snowfall so far means that even if there was an extended period without snow, conditions should still remain good. However, according to the current forecasts there could be some snowfall next Wednesday to top up the current snow cover. Other than that snowfall, the forecast is for more sun for the week. With the school holidays just beginning, these are perfect conditions for anyone in ski school, particularly young children. Work has continued on the various snowparks in Avoriaz, as well as the half pipe, and there are now four separate jump lines as well as plenty of rails and boxes. For anyone wishing to avoid ski schools during the school holidays, the parks are a pretty safe bet.

The sun is now setting much later in the afternoon, meaning that skiers can make the most of areas such as Super Morzine at the end of the day before getting the last lift back down to town. There had been quite a lot of snow on the pavements in Morzine which had turned to ice, leading to a few people slipping over on the Rue Du Bourg. The ice has now melted, however. The slopes this week have not been noticeably busier than in the past couple of weeks, although this is bound to change in the next couple of days as the school holidays really begin in earnest.
