Gemma Campbell: Owner-Manager of Mountain Lets

A fore-runner of letting self-catered apartments & back-flipping on her snowboard

featured in Meet the locals Author Ellie Mahoney, Morzine Editor Updated

Plate-spinning and juggling lots of balls always come to mind when thinking of the companies that operate apartments and chalets, especially in a busy year-round resort like Morzine. Think about all the requirements that you have when you're going on holiday, times that by 10 and the think of a few completely random requests - these companies and the people that run them take pride in being able to answer all your questions and hopefully solve all your problems to ensure you have the best holiday experience.

From tall orders to special dietary requirements, can you bring your dog?, is there somewhere for the kids to play?, what clothes should you pack?, where can you picnic?, what can you do if you're not skiing or biking?, what time is dinner? will you have tetley tea? who's better snowboarders or skiers??...

This week we've caught up with Gemma from Mountain Lets, a keen snowboarder [we're not biased honest!] who's normally busy renting chalets & apartments, selling and managing property in Morzine, walking her dog Pebbles & loking after her son. We dragged her away from all the pre-winter season hubbub for a quick chat..

Tell us a little bit about your business, how it started out and where you're based..

Mountain Lets was set up in 2008 to specialise in providing good quality self catered accommodation in Morzine. At the time there were many operators offering catered chalets but not many people providing excellent service for guests in self catered properties.

How long have you been in your current role and how long have you been with the company?

I have been running the company ever since and our portfolio has gradually expanded over the last 5 years.

What makes Morzine a special place to be for someone in your profession?

Morzine is a great town, with a vibrant community and awesome terrain for skiing and boarding plus the summers are amazing here too!

What are the best bits about your job?

Seeing the business expand and all the positive feedback from our lovely guests - sounds cheesy but it's true!

And the worst bits?

Hmmmm - not being able to head up the mountain at the weekends because I'm too busy!

What is in store for the future with your business, any exciting projects in the pipelines that you can share with us?

We are hoping to continue expanding whilst maintaining our service levels and we have a couple of exciting renovation projects we're working on with owners to provide some beautiful self catered accommodation in the heart of Morzine. Looking forward to our new website launch too and developing some new business ideas too! Plenty to keep me busy.

What are you personal and professional goals for the future?

I would love to see all our properties full all the time with happy guests and still have time to head up the mountain during the week. Maintaining a work life balance is really important to me as I strongly believe that happiness promotes efficiency and health!

What's your favourite piste or off-piste area & top tip to go skiing?

The off piste around Nyon is amazing!

Where would send someone who was after that something 'something special' in resort, to stay, eat or drink?

I had a fantastic meal at Les Vents d'Anges in Morzine recently - food was amazing!

Your favourite place for lunch or dinner?

La Chaudanne has long been a favourite - especially now they have the lovely wine bar downstairs

Where will we find the best coffee or hot chocolate?

Dottys luxury hot chocolate - mmmm!

What has been your best ever day in Morzine?

Learning to back flip with my husband

Do you remember your first trip to this resort?

I certainly do, amazing holiday with my best friends, awesome snow - I totally fell in love with Morzine and met my now husband - all about 11 years ago now!

What's your favourite thing to do in resort when not skiing or snowboarding?

Walking - I love going out for walks with our dog Pebbles and our son Evan

What do you do in the summer?

We operate year around as a business, so I am busy through the summer too. For fun, I would love to say downhill mountain biking but in truth I find it terrifying. Walking, swimming and road biking are more my style!

Which is your favourite shop in resort?

Slopestyle or Ski Park Pow

Where are we most likely to find you for après-ski?!

As sad as it sounds on the sofa with a cup of tea!

...

Thanks Gemma.. we're very impressed with your back-flipping skills by the way :-)
