Rescue teams have spent the afternoon on the mountain

Emergency services were called out to a section of Mont Chery in Les Gets this afternoon after an avalanche hit part of a red piste in the resort.

Rescue teams spent the afternoon looking for skiers caught up in the slide but have now called off the search. Firefighters, volunteers and search dogs were amongst the teams looking for people. However, thankfully, it appears nobody was injured.

The avalanche measured 300 metres long by 50 metres wide and 2 metres thick.

The avalanche warning in parts of the Portes du Soleil is at number 4/5 meaning there is real risk that we could see more slides like today. Authorities are asking skiers and boarders to take extra care when out on the slopes, to look after each other and also not to take any unnecessary risks. More snow is due over the next few days which will undoubtedly increase the danger of avalanches.
