Morzine Apres Ski Report: 3rd February 2012

Apres report from a very cold Morzine

Imprint
By Tom Freeman & Victoria Mills, Updated

Hello again from freeeeezing Morzine! It seems a touch of Siberia has descended into the valley this week with temperatures dropping down to -14 in town and -25 up on the slopes! So, whilst it’s been great for the snow, the fingers and toes have definitely suffered and the apres this week has definitely been more for indoor venues than outdoor.

On Tuesday, after a hard day making the most of the awesome powder we have been blessed with recently, we decided to head to Dixie Bar for some après drinks as they now have live music every day from 5:30pm. Back for another season are “The Dixie Micks” who play traditional Irish music and really get the crowd going. It’s a wicked place to spend an hour or two with lots of singing and a great atmosphere and conveniently situated at the bottom of Rue de Bourg.

Also, if live music is what you are after, The Cavern, situated along Taille de mas du Pleney, has “The Cab Collective” playing every Thursday and Sunday at 5pm and also every Wednesday night from 10pm - a good place to head after you’ve ended up partying at Le Tremplin on a Wednesday! To lure you in further to the Cavern, their happy hour is every day from 4pm - 6pm and pints of Grolsch €3.50.

This Saturday sees the first event on the Stade du Pleney slope with Rock the Race taking place in the afternoon. It’s a giant slalom race that anyone can enter and take part with some cool prizes on offer including a big cheque to the winner, Rossignol skis and champagne amongst others. Qualification starts at 2pm, with a big show and finals from 5pm so make sure you get over to Pleney tomorrow as it’s sure to be good fun for all. To coincide with this event, Le Tremplin are having a “Mega” Apres party on their terrace from 4pm, live DJ and special guest ‘Drummer on the Dancefloor’ from Paris.

Our mountain side recommendation for this week would have to be the Rosset’taz restaurant which can be found at the top of La Rosta lift in Les Gets, just down from the top of the lift on the right. After a heavy night on Wednesday we managed to drag ourselves out skiing for a few hours and ended up here for some good old hangover food…and it did not disappoint. Luckily it was a warm day so we could take advantage of the spectacular view over the back towards Mont Blanc and down into an untouched snowy valley. However, the food was also spectacular in its own right. Pizzas, Savoyard dishes, pasta and some HUGE burgers are on offer and service is super fast which is good as we were craving something naughty and fast! Also worth a note is that it will not break the bank either and you definitely won't go away hungry.

The promise of an all new indoor swimming complex at the Palais du Sport for “Winter 2011/12” has finally been fulfilled. Good news for those of you who may enjoy a nice après swim in the new 25m x 15m pool or some down time in one of the 3 sauna‘s or 2 hammams. Unfortunately you will have to wait a little longer for the hammams as they are not quite finished yet but watch this space. There are pools for the children as well so there is something for all the family. Swimming prices are as follows: Adult €7, Child €5 or buy 5 admissions for €30 and 20€ respectively.

Lastly, our random recommendation for this week has to go to the horse and cart rides you can now get around town on, leaving from the Tourist Square. We are yet to try but it is definitely good fun for the family and especially the kids. Trips range from a quick circuit of town for €15 all the way up to €75 for a trip round to Lake Montriond. Prices are inclusive for 4-5 people.

Here’s a look at some other events taking place this week in and around town:

  • On Monday 6th the weekly Welcome to Morzine drinks will be held outside the Office de Tourisme at 4pm, so pop along for a free Chocolate or Green Chaud.
  • Thursday 9th Feb - Night skiing on the Pleney stade slope from 8pm - 10pm (depending on snow conditions…which look good so far!)

Well, that’s all from us again for another week. Have a good weekend, try to catch the Rock the Race Slalom on Saturday and make sure you wrap up warm as it’s going to be very chilly for a good few days yet. Bon Après!
