Morzine Apres Ski Report: 20th February 2013
A Retro Apres
With the pistes packed out this week owing to the February half term holidays, the balance between hours on the hill and hours in the bar has shifted somewhat. You’re more likely to find me stretched out on the sunny terrace of Bar La Barque in Montriond than huffing and puffing my way through a lift queue.
So with all of these various obstructions (people) in mind, you might be looking for ways to spice up your après this week. Here’s a few…
1 – Go Retro
The Retro Rentals phenomenon is sweeping the Alps, as far as Tignes, Meribel and Val d’Isere. But their heart is in Morzine and there are a couple of Retro après parties each week that you need to know about. The Cavern Bar in the centre of Morzine hosts a time-warp of 80’s onesie goodness each and every Monday. ‘Keep it tight, keep it bright’ is the theme and free shots are offered for the worst dressed. And if that isn’t enough retro goodness for you, for just €10 per day you can hire your own piece of onesie love and join the Retro Rentals party at the Happy Hours bar in Ardent from 4pm.
2 – Go Painted
She’s possibly one of the brightest characters in town, but Pixie Paint’s Pixie is definitely one of the most talented. A serial face painter terrorising the après parties of Morzine, you’ll find Pixie at pretty much every après party in both Morzine and Les Gets. If you’re going out out (as in, for a big night), find out where Pixie is and have her change your face into an unrecognisable creature of mountain fun.
3 – Go Elsewhere
There’s loads of great après on the outskirts of Morzine. If you’re lucky enough to be staying in Montriond, just a 15 mintue walk into Morzine centre, then Bar La Barque (AKA ‘the tabac’) has the sunniest après terrace in the valley. Each Tuesday night there’s a different live band from 6.30pm and the whole bar gets packed out. It’s worth making the trip out of Morzine to experience the atmosphere!
4 – Go Sporty
There’ll be some amongst you who can’t enjoy a ski holiday without your Six Nations rugby fix. If you’re one of them, thank heavens for Big Foot’s Bar in Les Gets. The doors open at midday each weekend and there’s all the live sport you could ever want to watch on a plethora (five to be exact) of huge TVs. There’s also €10 curry pots available in the bar.
5 – Go Big
There’s a Basscamp après party happening somewhere every night this week. If you’re keen to avoid the crowds at first lifts, then a sneaky little hangover doesn’t matter so much does it? The biggest party is sure to be on Wednesday night at Le Tremplin in Morzine from 4pm, but also give the Hotel Bellevue in Les Gets a try on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and the Hotel Neige et Roc on Mondays and Fridays.
In other news, it feels like spring has sprung this week in Morzine and since we’ve broken the back of the season, some of us are letting our attention turn to the summer season.
Registration for the Pass'Portes du Soleil is open too!
