Morzine feels properly settled into winter as the year comes to an end, with cold air sitting in the valley and the surrounding slopes looking cleaner and more consistent than they did earlier in the month. The village is lively with New Year visitors, but out on the mountain things feel calm and steady. This season so far has built gradually rather than quickly, and conditions right now reflect that, with reliable skiing higher up and more mixed surfaces lower down, which is very typical for late December in this part of the Portes du Soleil.
Snow depths around Morzine are currently sitting at roughly 20 to 35 cm at village level, with deeper cover building to around 90 to 120 cm across higher terrain, particularly toward Avoriaz and the upper reaches of the Portes du Soleil. There has been little in the way of fresh snowfall in recent days, so most of the skiing is on a settled base supported by regular grooming. Daytime temperatures in the village are hovering around freezing, dropping below zero overnight, while temperatures at altitude remain colder and more stable throughout the day. Freezing levels are generally low, often around 800 to 1,200 m, which is helping preserve snow quality on shaded runs. Winds have been mostly light to moderate, with occasional stronger breezes on exposed ridges but nothing widespread enough to significantly affect lift operations. On the snow, pistes are firm and grippy first thing, softening slightly on sunnier slopes by late morning, while higher and north facing runs hold a more wintery, chalky feel for longer. Lower links back toward Morzine can become harder packed and more polished later in the day, so timing makes a noticeable difference.
The outlook through New Year remains cold and largely dry, with clear spells expected and no significant snowfall forecast in the immediate term. This should keep piste conditions consistent, especially higher up, but it also means off piste options will stay limited without fresh snow unless you are sticking to very sheltered terrain. New Year’s Eve in Morzine brings a full programme of village events, including live music, family friendly entertainment and a fireworks display organised by the local tourist office in the evening. There are also torchlight descents planned in the wider Portes du Soleil area, adding to the end of year atmosphere across the resort.
For the next few days, the best skiing will be found higher up toward Avoriaz and on north facing pistes where snow quality stays most consistent. Use lower runs earlier in the day before they firm up, and expect dependable on piste conditions while the cold, settled weather continues.
