Art Tea Chow Cafe Review
A café with a difference! (mainly because it’s been open throughout inter-season)
From the minute I walked into Art Tea Chow in the heart of Morzine, I felt at home. Pots full of different teas line the shelves around the small café on the Route De La Telepherique, and there’s always a fresh homemade cake sitting on the counter. The smell of spices from the tea leaves is very tempting, especially if, like me, you’re missing a good old cup of English tea.
The café itself sits a little way back from the road but you won’t miss it. Its colourful stools, umbrellas and Thai retreat style décor make it stand out.
The enthusiastic and warm welcome from the owners also make it a special place to go for a moment of relaxation. Keen to encourage you into the shop to sample one of the many exotic teas on offer, the waiter and manager certainly made me feel wanted. When I asked for a chai latte, he was excited to let me smell the fresh tea leaves before putting them in a lovely china tea pot to brew. Alongside the lovingly prepared drink, to make you feel that extra bit special, you also get two mini meringues to go alongside your tea, a nice alternative touch to a biscuit.
The café is as quirky inside as it is from the outside. It houses an eclectic mix of paintings and decorations from pictures of mountains and the countryside to displays of china ornaments. Although small, there’s plenty of seating - from the sofas and stools in the relaxation area to the right of the café to more traditional, slightly less comfy, metal tables and chairs inside the café itself. As if the décor wasn’t enough to make you feel like you’d stepped into a beach side bar, the lively reggae music will certainly take you there.
As for food, there’s a narrow range on offer and is all prepared in a small kitchen on site. Including the tasty cakes, the café also prides itself on its waffles and crepes.
It’s an ideal spot for a quick lunchtime bite, especially if you’re not looking for a heavy three-course plat de jour at one of the nearby restaurants. It’s also reasonably priced with a tasty cup of tea costing around 4€ and a crepe around 6€.
A lovely, chilled out alternative if you fancy something that’s a little bit different to the traditional Savoyard experience.
