Give yourself plenty of time to enjoy a long lunch at this riverside spot

The Tyrolia sits nestled back from the main road in Morzine and its unassuming appearance means it often gets overlooked. However, looks can be deceiving! It's a hidden gem in Morzine that serves delicious food throughout the year, including during the inter-season. Give yourself plenty of time to enjoy a traditional long lunch but expect to be rather full once you have!

We’ve been to Le Tyrolia several times recently and we’re not ashamed to say that it’s likely we’ll be back again soon. It’s one of the only places that remains open throughout the inter-season in Morzine which perhaps explains why it’s always busy. It’s also popular with both locals and tourists so there’s never a shortage of people through the doors.

The restaurant sits at the bottom of the Rue du Bourg in Morzine, right next to the river. It has plenty of seating both inside and outside however on sunny days, nothing can beat sitting by the water, in the shadow of the surrounding mountains of Nyon and Ressachaux.

The restaurant serves traditional French cuisine alongside salads, baguettes and meat dishes. It has a traditional plat du jour menu as well which usually consists of a meat dish of some kind. It’s also a popular drinking venue with locals so it also has a decent range of beers, wines and spirits to choose from. You can always expect to see a number of people here enjoying a long lunch with a bottle or two of wine.

It was a boiling hot day when we went recently and most of the tables outside were already taken. However with the help of the lovely manager, who is always happy to go out of his way to welcome you to his restaurant, we were able to move two tables together and sit in the shade, which was a relief. We quickly ordered a round of beers whilst we looked at the menu. One of the men in our party had already decided what he was going to have and didn’t even need to read what was on offer. Apparently the kebab baguette is a must have! We ordered two of those along with a couple of salads.

Despite it being very busy in the restaurant, the waiter was more than happy to chat to us and even helped us to practice our French. This may sound strange but his encouragement and patience makes you feel very welcome! He was obviously run off his feet but nothing was too much for him. He also brought us complimentary digestives at the end of the meal, which was also very welcome!

We didn’t have to wait long for our food to arrive and the looks on the boy’s faces said it all - their huge kebab baguettes that were laced with a delicious sauce went down pretty quickly. However, they were so filling that both men didn’t have room for all of their chips. It’s a shame us girls only had salads, we just HAD to help them out! Having said that, the salads here are also enormous, so we didn’t have much room left either. They were laden with cheese and crispy croutons and the Mediterranean salad came with a huge portion of tuna. The leaves and vegetables were fresh and the dressing didn’t overpower the meal like it sometimes can do. It was really tasty.

We had to give puddings a miss on this occasion but will be back to give them a whirl at some point in the near future! I’ve had a hot chocolate at the Tyrolia before though and can say for certain that that was delicious. If you’ve got room to try a dessert, if the main course is anything to go by, I’m sure it will be pretty special.

We were surprised with our digestives once we’d finished eating. On this occasion it was a delicious toffee vodka that topped off the dinner perfectly. Bearing in mind that it was only lunchtime, this was a huge feed. One thing I would say about Le Tyrolia is that if you’re planning to do anything after your trip there- you may want to rethink. I had to have a snooze when I got home I was so full!
