Morzine Snow Report:14th January 2014

Snow returns to Morzine & Avoriaz just in time

featured in Snow report Author James Fisher, Morzine Video Reporter Updated

The snow fell last night and this morning in Morzine and Avoriaz. Only a few centimeters came down as low as Morzine town at 1000m but it was enough to transform the town and on the higher ground the slopes.

This morning there was almost zero visibility on the open slopes and skiing was very much confined to the trees but above 1500m the skiing was great as there had been about 20cm of fresh snow since yesterday afternoon.

I headed to the Linderets bowl at midday and was greeted by that most wonderful of sites on a snowy powder day; patches of blue sky. Although the break in the clouds was short lived we managed to hike up from the top of the Chaux Fleurie chairlift along to top side of the Linderets bowl and drop into the run popularly known as "Satellite". The snow on top was very nice but we were going through to the hard, crusty layer below so although it was a powder run it was by no means bottomless.

The new snow is very good. Light off piste but grippy on the well run pistes and it has transformed both the resorts and the slopes. We haven't seen enough new snow to completely resurrect the off-piste but there is some good snow out there.

Tomorrow is looking like it's going to be sunny and there is a further 20cm of snow forecast for Thursday night and Friday morning on the higher ground. By the weekend we could be into some proper powder.
