Morzine Snow Report: 8th December 2011

Snow and lots of it, good news ahead of Morzine opening

featured in Snow report Author Phil Smith, Updated

There is great news in resort this week – snow and lots of it. The pretty much constant falls started up last weekend and continued right through until last night. Today it is gloriously sunny so I’ll be heading out later to do some ski randonnée (alpine touring) to take advantage!

The upshot is we are going to be out on the hill with chairlift assistance, as of Saturday. And Avoriaz have announced 80% of pistes will be open this weekend. And there are two events this weekend; the Rock on Snowboard Tour and the TTR World Snowboard Tour. The Prodains télépherique is open from 8am to midnight on Friday. Other resorts in the Portes du Soleil are also opening as follows:

Châtel and Pré-la-joux : Secteur de Pré-la-Joux : Les télésièges de Pré-la-Joux, de Pierre-Longue, de la Chaux des Rosées, de Cornebois; Le téléski du Keyset; Les pistes des Rennes, des Rochassons (partie inférieure), de Pré-la-Joux (partie supérieure), des Blattins.

Champéry have also announced which lifts will open this weekend, just the télépherique and Crosets: téléphérique de Champéry, le télésiège des Crosets (TSD Crosets 8). The links between Champery and Les Crosets are also open.

The other resorts are a little academic for this coming week as the links between them and Morzine are not open until the 17th December. It does however serve to illustrate that it’ll be all systems go all over the Portes du Soleil, as scheduled.

A last note on the quantity of snow these last few days, as I type this in resort I can hear the piste patrol setting off explosives up the mountain to manage the avalanche risk.

A quick none skiing related mention, for those in need of relaxation after the slopes. How about the new indoor swimming complex in Morzine to complement the outdoor, summer only swimming pool? The new covered complex comprises a 25m pool, a learner’s pool, paddling pool, and a 160m squared wellbeing area with three saunas and two hammams (Turkish bath) – brilliant for soaking those skiing aches away.

Bon Ski!
