Morzine Snow Report: 7th April 2015

The storms have cleared and the sun is out, but how is the snow?

Following over a week of heavy storms in the Alps, the sun has come back for Easter week.

Heavy rainfall in town has left the lower slopes looking quite bare, and the run from Nyon back to The Pleney is now little more than a thin strip of snow.

However, there is significantly better news on the higher slopes with approximately ten to fifteen centimetres of fresh snow on the slopes and good conditions. This is true of the slopes above Avoriaz on the Arare side and also heading over towards Lindarets. In the direction of Chatel, the snow is generally good around Linga and Pre La Joux, although it does thin out significantly towards the bottom, and approaching Chatel the slopes opposite Linga are very noticeably greener than just a fortnight ago.

Heading up Super Chatel, from the centre of Chatel, the snow for the most part is in good condition. The slopes are relatively uncrowded, especially compared with Lindarets in Avoriaz. However, the chairlift towards Torgon is closed and the short run down to it from the top of the gondola has not been pisted, so it appears that it may well be closed for the season. The runs from the top of Super Chatel down towards Morgins are now also closed, meaning that it is not possible to ski the full Portes Du Soleil circuit, at least in this direction.

Returning to Chatel, it is advisable to get the gondola down. The bottom section of the run is very muddy and rocky now, and unless some snow is moved around it will probably be closed very soon.

With warm weather set to continue this week the conditions on lower slopes will continue to deteriorate. However, the higher slopes still retain good snow. Morzine, Les Gets and the link to Avoriaz via Super Morzine are all due to close this weekend (12th April) so all efforts can then go in to ensuring that Avoriaz is kept in the best possible condition. Avoriaz will continue to be accesible via the Prodains lift until the 26th of April, when the traditional Chez Flo party will end the season with a bang.
