Morzine Snow Report: 10th February 2015

Snow castles in Avoriaz

featured in Snow report Author Giles Towler, Morzine Reporter Updated

With the slopes starting to get more and more crowded as the busy February period begins, and the pistes becoming icy in places, there is still fun to be had off the beaten track.

A few locals found a spot out in the backcountry and spent yesterday building a large "snow castle" jump, complete with battlements to repel any invaders.

Today the jump was ready to hit.

It was only accessible by traversing through a cliff band followed by a short hike, and was therefore quite isolated. So isolated in fact that a number of chamois were spotted on the ridge line above the jump as people relaxed in the "castle".

After high winds yesterday, today was warm and sunny with no wind, so conditions were perfect and everyone had a good day hitting the jump until the sun disappeared behind the cliff, at which point it was time to return to the  pistes and the crowds.

Next week will be even more crowded on the slopes with the big half term weeks starting, but with snow forecast for this weekend there should be plenty to keep people entertained, as well as covering over the ice on the pistes.
