Morzine Snow Report: 14th February 2015

A sunny holiday snow report from Morzine

featured in Snow report Author Ally MacLeod, Morzine Reporter Updated

This week the weather we've seen has been something out of springtime skiing. Sunshine, clear blue skies and balmy temperatures have been a real treat, but we're hoping the temperature drops once again to bring in some more big dumps of snow.

February rarely sees the sunshine and the great piste conditions that skiers and snowboarders enjoyed in the Portes du Soleil this week, and although season workers and locals were wishing for more snow to last the season, they'd be lying if they said they hadn't loved the sun this week.

The rising temperature has melted much of the snow off the trees and in Morzine town, but piste conditions have been excellent across the Portes Du Soleil with only a few turning to slush in the heat of the sun in the afternoon at lower altitudes. The sun has seen the world class snowparks across the Portes Du Soleil come to life, with a great variety of features of varying difficulty across the Chapelle Park and Arare Park in Avoriaz, new features in Mont Chery and the long runs of the Smooth Park in Châtel, boarders and skiers who enjoy slopestyle skiing have been spoilt for choice.

This weekend 15cm around of snow is forecast for altitudes above 1200m, although with more warm weather predicted at the end of the week we are hoping that enough falls to maintain the snow on the ground.  Visibility maybe restricted at the beginning of week until Tuesday if light snow continues to fall, but guests here for half term will be delighted to know the that sunshine and clear skies will return at the end of the week.

With it being half term its always worth keeping in mind that the lift queues will be longer, especially on the routes up to Avoriaz by the Super Morzine and Prodains cable car at peak times so leave in plenty of time to get to lessons. Slopes can be crowded around the beginner areas of Avoriaz, so always keep an eye out for rogue little ones who have fallen out their ski school line and keep speed reasonable. If you’re looking to avoid the queues, getting the Ardent bubble up the mountain to fast track over to skiing in Châtel and resorts in Switzerland will skip the queues in Avoriaz.

For great family activities after a day on the slopes why not take the kids to Parc de Dereches swimming pool in Morzine for a bit of a splash around, or if you’re staying in Avoriaz take them to discover the tropical aqua land of Aquariaz, were they can paddle around and play on the little climbing walls while you sit and watch in the nearby jacuzzi!

Happy Holidays everyone!
