Early March in Morzine feels like a transition period, with winter still very much present on the higher slopes while the village shows the first hints of spring between snowfalls. The surrounding peaks above Avoriaz and towards Les Gets are well covered, and once you are up above 1800 metres the landscape looks firmly mid season. The Portes du Soleil links are running well and there is a steady rhythm to the days now that the busiest holiday weeks are easing.
Snow and Weather Summary
Current snow depths are around 35 to 55 cm at resort level in Morzine at 1000 metres, with between 150 and 210 cm reported on the higher slopes above 2000 metres, particularly on the Avoriaz side and towards Champery. A light fall of around 5 to 10 cm at altitude over the past few days has freshened upper runs and improved coverage on exposed areas, while the base remains well established higher up.
Temperatures have ranged from minus 8 to minus 4 degrees on upper slopes, while the village has seen daytime highs between plus 2 and plus 7 degrees depending on sunshine. The freezing level has fluctuated between 1500 and 2000 metres, dropping overnight to allow pistes to refreeze effectively. Winds have been generally light, with occasional moderate gusts on higher ridges but little impact on lift operations.
On piste, the best conditions are found above 1800 metres where snow remains firm and consistent for much of the day. The higher sectors towards Avoriaz are skiing particularly well, with good grip and reliable coverage. Mid mountain runs are enjoyable in the mornings and soften on sunnier aspects during the afternoon. Lower runs back to Morzine are open where coverage allows and are best tackled earlier in the day during milder spells.
