First snow of the winter 2016-17 season
Winter has come back to the Portes Du Soleil
Throughout Saturday heavy rain fell in Morzine, which has given way to snow overnight.
The snow has started to settle with about three to five centimetres already settling at the bottom of the Pleney. More snow has fallen higher up, with about twenty centimetres up Super Morzine and there is already a good covering in Avoriaz village. The snowfall looks set to continue into the coming week.
For the past fortnight temperatures have continued to drop throughout the area as winter has been drawing closer. This means that the ground should now be cold enough, at least at higher altitudes, that the snow should begin to settle for winter and the base can begin to build up.
Anyone planning to use the local roads should ensure that they have winter tyres and it is a good idea to have chains as the forecast suggests that they might be necessary later in the week, especially when driving to Avoriaz.
The current forecast suggests that the weather will clear on Monday morning before closing in again for the rest of the week with heavy snowfall predicted till Thursday evening.
With just over one month till the first lifts open in Avoriaz, this will hopefully be the start of a good base layer for winter.
