Col de Joux Plane Closure Forces Events in Morzine to Change Route

Flood damage means the route probably won't be open all summer

It’s been announced that one of the Porte Du Soleil’s most famous roads will remain closed throughout the summer whilst work to repair it after a recent landslide is completed.

The Route de Col de Joux Plane, linking Morzine with Samoens, was damaged earlier this month when the region was battered by heavy rain and flooding. The closure is expected to cause significant disruption for people visiting the region, especially those on Road cycling or motor biking holidays.

The Joux Plane is extremely popular with road cyclists, having featured in the Tour De France a number of times. Organisers of the regions main cycling event, the Cyclosportive Morzine- Haut- Chablias, have changed the end of their route to avoid the closure, instead taking riders up the Col de la Ramaz and L’Encrenaz. Similarly organisers of the popular bike festival, Morzine Harley Days and the rally car festival, the Rallye du Mont Blanc, have been told about the closure and will also change their route plans to work around it.

It is still possible to reach Samoens by alternative routes, drivers are advised to travel to Taninges and then take the D907 to Samoens and other popular climbs around the region remain open.

It’s thought that the amount of rainfall seen at the beginning of the May was the most seen in the Portes Du Soleil for more than 100 years and it’s predicted it will cost more than 7 million euros to repair the damage caused across the region.
