Morzine Apres Ski Report: 6th February 2013
A Sporting Apres Session
The Morzine-Avoriaz Penguins ice hockey team are celebrating their 50th season this winter and they are still one of the best ice hockey teams in France. A lot of effort goes into promoting the club to holidaymakers and local people during the winter season and you’re sure to see their striking posters around town. Here are 5 reasons why you should take in an ice hockey match this winter in Morzine
1 – Despite currently being 8th in the ‘Ligue Magnus’ (think Barclay’s Premier League), the Penguins reached the league cup final last year and are still regarded as one of the best teams in France.
2 – The Skoda Arena, in the centre of Morzine and just under the Super Morzine bridge is the Penguins’ home stadium. It’s easily accessible and has an overall capacity of over 1000 people, which creates a fantastic atmosphere during an ice hockey match.
3 – There’s often quite a bit of rivalry between teams and you’ll probably see a few scraps between players on the rink. This all adds to the tension and the atmosphere, especially when a star player is punished in the sin bin!
4 – As ski resort prices go, a night out at a hockey match is relatively inexpensive with adults priced at €12 and kids at €8. The bar and café at the Skoda Area serves reasonably priced food and drinks, a pint of lager is €5 for example, and a glass of wine €2.50. Tickets for the ice hockey are available in advance from the Office de Tourisme in Morzine, or on the door at the Skoda Arena.
5 – If you’re on holiday in Morzine you haven’t just chosen any old ski resort for your annual slide on the snow. You’ve chosen a proper village that offers much more than happy hour après drinks and fancy dress parties. Take advantage of this and pay the Penguins a visit!
Ice hockey matches usually start at 8.45pm and you can view the entire winter fixtures list in our events calendar or via the official team webpage - If you can’t make a match, you can go and watch the team train on the ice each weekday afternoon until 2pm at the Skoda Arena.
Also in resort this week…
Wednesday night at Le Tremplin sees the launch of ‘made in Morzine’ headwear brand Stardust Factory. There’ll be live DJs, giveaways, free hats and t-shirts and a load of other fun on the Tremplin terrace from 4pm. The launch party is likely to be one of the biggest après events of the winter in Morzine so if you’re in town this week, don’t miss it.
Thursday nights at Le Tibetan have gained a huge following this winter, as Chris Topliss pops over from Chamonix to entertain the Morzine après skiers from 5pm. After last week’s experience, I’d recommend getting there early and grabbing a prime seat as he puts on quite a show does Chris!
And if you’re heading out this weekend, Le Tibetan, the Dixie Bar and Big Foot’s in Les Gets are all showing full coverage of the Six Nations rugby all weekend.
Have a good week!
