Ali from 44 South in Morzine gives us a run down of her recent road bike race the Time Megeve....
Morzine is well know for its many cycling and hiking routes, not to mention its mountain biking. I was chatting with hairdresser Beckalina Stewart at the weekend and together we've come up with a list of alternative things you might want to try out in Morzine during the summer.
There was lots of two wheel action here in Morzine over the weekend but this time of the motorbike kind - the town playing host to a Harley Davidson festival. This is at least the second year the festival has been to Morzine but things were on a much grander scale this time with thousands in attendance, lots of stalls selling merchandise and many music events in the various bars around town culminating in the mighty Status Quo on Saturday night.
Paragliding is a great sport and the high cliffs of Avoriaz and the valley that forms the town of Morzine make the resort and ideal place for a flight. With that in mind I booked a session with Evolution 2 Ski and Adventure school in Avoriaz.
Although the weather is still giving the impression of high summer (lots of sunshine, blue skies and pleasantly warm temperatures), the summer season is drawing to a close. This last weekend the lifts on the Swiss side of the Portes du Soleil, accessed via Super Morzine, closed - the Pleney and Les Gets will follow this coming weekend.
Even before the snow disappeared and the pistes were shut, road cyclists were out in force across the Portes Du Soleil, making the most of the amazing weather we had in the last few weeks of the season. In the same way, we started to see more and more mountain bikes coming out of the woodwork giving us a little glimpse of what the area will look like in the summer.
The weather is picking up nicely today and for the coming weekend and is forecast to stay warm and sunny into next week – happy days. The Pleney telecabine is now up and running and Les Gets is open this weekend and will stay open during the week for the rest of the season.
After spending the summer based in the heart of the Portes du Soleil, I could hardly feel hard done by in terms of Alpine adventures. However, most of these revolved around the ski lift system emanating from Morzine and onwards to the further reaches of the ski area into Switzerland. Now the season was at an end it was time to access the abundance of trails a little further a field. For this particular adventure we would be getting away from the relative hussle and bussle to the wilder reaches of the Reserve Naturelle de Sixt Passy for a one way single track trip starting in Chamonix and finishing in Morzine.
"The worst thing about holidaying in Morzine is having to leave"!
The first Urban Roof ‘n Slopestyle took place in July 2008 in Morzine. It was an event that, on paper, looked amazing. A freestyle mountain bike competition that would bring riders from around the world to a purpose built track that ran through the centre of Morzine town, over the rooftops…….yeah right!
Morzine and the surrounding area is a haven for skiing in the winter and cycling in the summer, but the fun doesn’t stop here. It’s a perfect place for family holidays with activities for every age. If you’re planning to bring your children, they won’t be bored!
It’s been the usual mixed bag of cycling activities for me of late. Some road biking and some mountain biking. The weather has been mostly set fine since my last report although it is raining as I type. Not to worry the forecast is for 100% sunshine tomorrow and highs of 27 degrees.
Holidays and trips away are about having fun and doing lots of activities, but they’re also about relaxing and escaping from your busy lives for a little while.
We had a stunning day’s weather yesterday to go with our big adventure ride over into the Swiss town of Monthey. The weather picked up over last weekend, as forecast but the highlight was yesterday’s scorcher! We’ve managed a couple of good mountain bike rides and a road ride whilst the going has been good.
If you like a challenge, a thigh burner, a bit of a scramble and views to die for, this one’s for you.
Founded in 1987 in Tignes with a pioneering philosophy towards both teaching and service, Evolution 2 has grown over the years with offices throughout the French Alps.
What more could you want from a weekend of mountain biking in the Alps but sunshine, rain, mud, great people, great trails and a lot of cheese!
If the snow and the beautiful mountains haven’t got you feeling festive yet, the fact that there’s a bumper list of amazing things planned for Christmas and New Year certainly will!
