Morzine Apres Ski Report: 9th January 2013

Choose Your Apres Band Very Carefully....

featured in Nightlife Reviews Author Amie - Snow Motion Chalets, Morzine Reporter Updated

When I moved to Morzine three years ago the only decent band on the apres scene were a 70’s funk and soul cover group called Funkadelique. They’d pack out every venue they played and although elements of the band would change now and then, you could always rely on Funkadelique for a good night out. Things are very different in Morzine these days!

With so many apres bands gigging in the resort right now, you’d struggle to see them all during a seven night holiday. So here’s my guide to the apres bands of Morzine so you can pick and choose for yourself!

Clare Burnage – A singer and performer with a delightfully jazzy voice, you’ll find Clare at laid back venues such as La Chaudanne, Le Coup de Coeur and the Chalet Boomerang in Les Gets.

The Pistey Boys – Morzine newcomers (they’re actually based in Chamonix) put on a raucous performance and they’ve got the apres sound track down to a T. You’ll only see the Pistey Boys at Le Tibetan Cafe or Chalet Boomerang in Les Gets this winter and they really aren’t worth missing!

Amy Dearlove – A singer songwriter, Amy’s eclectic mash up of acoustic and electronic sounds come from her talents on the keyboard and violin. Amy is working on her first album at the moment too!

Eugene Carton – As a group, Eugene Carton are an energetic rock covers band. Eugene himself is most famous for his incredibly skillful guitar solos, which quite frankly, sound amazing during après. The band play all over Morzine.

CAB Collective – Guitarist and vocalist Johnny Mason and drummer Tom spin covers on their head, and if you’re lucky they’ll take requests too. My favourites… Fresh Price of Bellaire, Loonies and Informer, like you’ve never heard them before. You’ll usually find CAB Collective at The Cavern or L’Etale.

Chris Topliss – A very talented live act, having cut his teeth on the stages of Ayia Napa, the winter version of Chris is funky and cool. Think Temper Trap vs Massive Attack. You’ll find Chris at Le Tibetan Café during apres hours, keep an eye on the Tibetan Facebook page for more details.

Alex R – Playing as part of the group ‘The Buskers’ and also as a solo artist, Alex can be found at the Dixie Bar, Chez Roger as well as at Le Petit Auberge in Essert Romand.

Moving on from the live music to the electronic stuff! Tonight is a big night at the Basscamp Festival après party at Le Tremplin. Not only do tickets go on sale for the first Basscamp Apres Sessions event with DJ Cheeba at L’Opera on 15th January, but there are no less than three special guest DJs ready to rock that heated terrace between 16:00 and 20:00. DJs Tweak and Bleep, resident DJs at the Boomtown Fair Festival along with DJ Jason Fubar from Ministry of Sound and Gatecrasher are set to make Morzine’s biggest après party even bigger.

And I’ve heard a rumor that another huge DJ (and I’m talking big, like, off the radio DJ) is also in Morzine at the moment and could make an appearance behind the turntables at Le Tremplin tonight. I’ll be there, even if you’re not and I’ll report back next week!
