Whether you head to Morzine in winter or summer, you and the kids are bound to leave with big smiles. From skiing and snowboarding to rafting, cycling, hiking and climbing, there’s always something to keep the whole family busy.

One of the best things about Morzine is how easy it is to get to. It’s only about an hour from Geneva airport, which makes life a lot easier if you’re travelling with little ones. Once you’re here, you’ll find the resort is made up of different areas, some of them quieter and more suited to families, so you can pick the setting that works best for you. Childcare is easy to arrange too, with nurseries and kids clubs that will give you a bit of time to yourself on the slopes.

In summer the climate is spot on for children as it’s warm enough for outdoor adventures but not too hot, with cooler evenings that make for a good night’s sleep. And when it comes to skiing, Morzine and the wider Portes du Soleil do have something for everyone, from gentle nursery slopes for beginners right up to more challenging runs and off-piste for the confident skiers in your crew.

Where to stay for families in Morzine

When you’re skiing with kids, staying close to the lifts or nursery slopes makes life much easier – fewer wobbles in ski boots and more time on the snow. Morzine and Les Gets are both family favourites with plenty of chalets, ski in ski out options and family-sized apartments. You’ll find gentle runs for beginners, ski schools nearby and a good mix of terrain for everyone else. Les Gets adds a pretty village feel with easy piste access and lots of off slope fun to keep younger ones happy after a day on the mountain.

Lift passes for families

Lift passes can be one of the biggest costs on a family ski trip, so it’s worth knowing the options. In Morzine children under 5 go free, while kids up to 15 and juniors up to 25 get reduced rates. You can also buy cheaper passes just for the beginner areas or a pedestrian pass if you’re not skiing but still want to head up and watch the action. Families or groups of four or more can save with discounted passes booked online, and there’s even a five hour ticket if a full day feels a bit much for the kids.

Ski schools for families

Getting the kids into ski school is one of the best ways to help them grow in confidence on the snow. In Morzine lessons start from age 3 with plenty of fun, games and gentle practice in safe beginner zones. Most schools offer half or full day sessions with English speaking instructors and magic carpet lifts to make life easier. Book early if you’re only staying a few days as spaces go fast. Just remember the lesson price doesn’t include lift passes or equipment, so you’ll need to sort those separately from the local hire shops.

Parents’ Tips

  • Book ski school early as places fill up fast
  • Half days are usually enough for little ones
  • Under 5s don’t need a lift pass but still need a hands-free card
  • Hire skis, helmets and goggles in resort to save packing space

Ski areas for families

Morzine is a brilliant place to learn with wide blue runs around Pleney and over to Les Gets, plus nursery slopes in town where you can use a cheaper lift pass. Beginners will love the gentle zones by the Belvedere lift and the Mappys area in Les Gets which has magic carpets and easy pistes. Kids can also explore the fun Grand Cry Indian Village on skis.

As confidence grows, the wider Portes du Soleil opens up with 426km of pistes, snowparks and freestyle zones, including dedicated kids’ areas in Avoriaz and boardercross runs in Les Gets.

Activities for families

Morzine and Les Gets have loads to keep the kids entertained all year round. In winter after the skiing if they still have energy you can try night sledging, ice skating, dog sledding or a horse drawn carriage ride. Summer is all about being outdoors with short family hikes, horse riding, high ropes courses, swimming and nature parks.

There’s also bowling, cinemas and the alpine coaster, which runs all year, so no one gets bored. School holidays are packed with fun events, activities and festivals for all ages, from concerts and creative workshops to fireworks, parades and snowman contests.
