Originally a French mining town, now a world class resort in summer & winter
Morzine is a thriving Alpine village set deep in the Chablais mountain range, between Lake Geneva and Mont Blanc, by the France-Switzerland border. It has grown over the years to become a charming ski resort in winter and a popular biking, hiking and alpine climbing destination in summer.
Although the village is situated at a relatively low 900m, its network of lifts reaches the panoramic Chamossière at 1800m and Avoriaz at 2100m. You may not be able to ski back to your accommodation at the end of the day but the extensive lift system means you'll make it home whatever the snow cover.
Morzine is just over an hour's drive from Geneva Airport and is located the middle of one of the biggest ski areas in the world, the Portes du Soleil. The resort is filled with cruisy, tree-lined blue and red runs, and it's also linked directly to the ski resorts of Avoriaz and Les Gets.

Morzine hosts a wide range of events throughout the year. The biggest winter festival is the Rock des Pistes week in March, where live bands play up on the pistes, with many other concerts being held in resort during the evenings. Highlights in summer include Crankworx and the Pass'portes du Soleil (two large mountain biking events), and the Spartan obstacle course race.
What to see & do in Morzine
Apart from the obvious benefits of choosing Morzine as a ski destination in winter, in summer the resort turns into a mecca for mountain bikers. The area offers riders some of the world’s best biking terrain, with around 380km of marked trails with varying degrees of technical skill required.
The low-level, traditional chalet-style buildings in Morzine help preserve the town's character and charm. Its roots as an old French farming and mining town are apparent in the village today, where local produce is available at the weekly market and many of the chalets sport local slate roofs.

The annual Trophée des Hauts Forts ski tour race in Avoriaz is a fun end of season celebration in memory of local hero Arthur Richard, consiting of a 1,000m climb up to the Hauts Forts from Prodains followed by a dash down the Bleue du Lac and then another 300m climb up Fornet before a ski to finish outside Chez-Flo.
